PAX 2008 Preview

Developed by German developer Replay, Velvet Assassin is an action stealth title that puts you in the shoes of an MI6 agent behind enemy lines in World War II. The game provides a story heavy approach, contextually mixing elements of the story through flashbacks. The game provides an interesting take on the stealth genre as well as the World War II setting, making for an intriguing title with some interesting gameplay mechanics.

In Velvet Assassin, you play as Violet Summer, a secret agent for MI6. The game’s plot is conveyed through flashbacks, as Violet is actually confined to a hospital bed for the game. You’ll run her missions through her memories, taking on the Nazi’s through cunning use of sabotage and stealth.

In the mission demoed by the developers in this year’s Penny Arcade Expo, Violet had to infiltrate a Nazi base and trigger some explosions. Along the way, she had a fair amount of tricks of the trade at her disposal, including various guns and items. One particularly interesting item was morphine, which caused the entire world to slow down. Another interesting effect of the morphine is that her hospital gown reappears on her, thus blurring the boundaries between the past and the present to an interesting effect.

Violet also has some cool actions that she can perform in the game. Aside from standard stealth kill moves, you’ll also be able to do things like trigger grenades on enemy soldiers, so that they’ll walk up to other soldiers right as their grenade is going off, which is an awesome touch.

Velvet Assassin is shaping up to be a very stylish stealth action game, with some interesting elements and cool gameplay. Look for it to release early next year.
